Getting married

Well, I learned a few things from my Bride magazines and other reading I did about weddings. They all seemed to be true even though at the time I thought, 'no way, we can make this work out.' Don't get me wrong, everything worked out great, but here are some pointers that I was given and how they played out:

1. You will rarely get to see your new husband, let alone spend time with him, at the wedding. No matter how few or many people you invite to the wedding, there is always someone that wants to talk to you or dance with you despite your own feelings. The first and last dance were the only ones that I can really remember being able to dance with Theron.

2. No matter how much you think you will stay in your dress all night, you will end up taking it off before the wedding is over. I got sooooo over-heated from dancing and being in close proximity to people and just in general. Wedding dresses are not made for anything except standing and looking pretty. Do not think you can dance in them, do not think you can sit in them. Oh, and don't try to go to the bathroom in one! (Hint: if you need to, face the wall and pull your dress up. Oh yes, sitting backwards on the toilet like Zach Morris always did in his chair). As soon as my friend realized I was dehydrating, I went up to my room to change (of course that took awhile and that is when many people left the wedding), but once I came back out in a more comfy dress, the night went so much better.

3. You will need people helping you throughout the wedding process, even if it is just to give you a drink of water. It is amazing that I did not get up to the bar until almost last call. Not even to get a water. And let me tell you, I drank a lot of water! Thank you to all those that helped me out during the photos, dancing, and wedding itself.

4. No matter what type of wedding you have, you will be sleep deprived! Often this starts during the week before the wedding (excitement) then during the wedding (too busy) and after the wedding (putting away presents, talking to relatives). And remember, being the bride, everyone wants to talk to you! Stay in a different hotel than the one you have the wedding in or make it clear you want no one coming to your room! Luckily the hotel kept my room number a secret.

5. As the bride (and the person who comes into the ceremony room last) you will not be attending your own wedding, per se. I did not get to see anyone walk down the aisle, only heard two of the songs, and was only in the ceremony room for 10 minutes out of a 30 minute ceremony. I hear it was beautiful, but too bad I didn't have a videographer!!

6. No matter how good at making decisions you are, you will go nuts after awhile. Weddings require too many decisions before, during and after...way after. Even if you hire people to make those decisions for you, there are so many to make. As  a non-decision-making person, it has been a tough past year! Whew!

Not so good dog treats

Well, those treats were supposed to stay good for a month out of the fridge and 2 months in the fridge. They molded over in a few days. Yuck! Don't think I'll be making those again! So, be forewarned.

Well, we got married this past Saturday. I will be posting pictures soon. It is funny that when there is a professional photographer at the event, less people appear to take their own pictures. Thanks to Tammy, we are able to have a lot of candid shots. It takes awhile to get the photos from the photographer, but I will post them as soon as we have them.

Dog Treat Recipe

I know it's been a long time since I've posted, and to welcome myself back I decided to share my favorite homeade, healthy, cancer-and-flea-fighting, yummy (for the dog) and easy dog treat recipe. Both Clyde-tested and mother-approved.

Herbal Dog Treats
1 Tbl. unsweetened applesauce (or substitute 1 Tbl. vegetable oil - not as healthy)
1 cup water
2 1/2 c. whole wheat flour
1/2 c. oatmeal
2 Tbl. fresh mint leaves (minced)
1/3 c. parsley (fresh)
1/4 tsp. minced garlic

Mix all together (may have to use hands as it makes a pretty stiff dough). Cook 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes depending on the size of the biscuits.

_______
Here's why these are cool: applesauce is good for joints and bones. Whole wheat flour is actually something that dogs can digest whereas they cannot digest bleached flour or corn. This is also a whole grain for the little guys. Oatmeal is another whole grain and they can digest it and get the nutrients from it. Mint leaves are for the good, fresh breath. Parsley is very high in Vitamin C (even higher per serving than spinach). And the minced garlic (fresh) is actually a flea repellant which they emit through their pores after eating it. Be careful with the garlic however; in large quantities it can be toxic to you dog - although it takes 50 cloves of garlic in one sitting to become toxic for a medium-sized dog.

and the doctor says...

This interesting tidbit came from the first paragraph of a front page New York Times article.

"As soon as swine flu vaccinations start next month, some people getting them will drop dead of heart attacks or strokes, some children will have seizures and some pregnant women will miscarry."

The writer's next paragraph then states that these supposed side effects of the vaccination are not in fact side effects at all. In fact, these are the normal side effects of a placebo injection.

Going to the chapel and I'm gonna get married...

Well, it's now official we are getting married. June 26, 2010 for all those who need to clear their calendars.

A total deal!

American Airlines e-mailed me today in regard to their special offers. Here's one for the books: "American Airlines: 30,000 miles gets you 30,000 feet!" I tell you, the miles I have better not turn into feet!

How old...?

I was reading a magazine article the other day and it ended with a question from a famous philosopher, which stated, "How old would you be if you didn't know how old you were?"

Good question! In a time like today's world, it is near impossible (at least in the U.S.) to not have some idea of how old you are, even if you may not know your birthday.

Thinking about answering the question really got me thinking. I would say, I would think that I was about 30 when it comes to mental abilities, probably about 40 when it comes to physical health what with my herniated disk and shoulder problems that don't even allow me to run or walk much any more (not to mention getting stiff after only a 45 minute car ride to school); however, when it comes down to it, I think socially i live my life as if I were (and still want to be) about 21 or 22. By pure looks, i would say i probably look about 24, which is two years younger than i actually am (although I think I look my age, I still get carded and when other grad students ask me how old i am they always think i am a few years younger than I actually am, which is nice).

So, how old are you?

American Idol 8

Although Kris Allen won (go AK!), I was still (and am still) rooting for Danny. How can you resist the blusey voice, sad backstory, and message of hope? Can't wait until he comes out with an album, actually both should have a pretty good album. As a side note, I am also waiting for Megan Joy's first album. Although I've watched each season, this is the first time I actually am going to listen to the music these people make. Can't wait for Season 9 (to AI producers: get rid of Kara - I hate her!!).

local exploring

On a lazy summer day, exploring the Meramec River (above) - a bit swollen from spring rains.

And, exploring the old quarry, which the Lions have now made into a hiking trail. To think that we used to cross the railroad tracks and tromp through the woods to get to this place. Now they have a trail. That effectively got rid of the drinking spot that many young teens used this spot for. See how community upkeep can keep delinquency down? (or at least out of sight).

cafes in a college town

Some pretty pictures I took while doing work in a cafe in columbia, mo. I miss the variety of cafes a college town can have. Although there are many here in St. Louis, you cannot literally walk down the street and have access to over 20 cafes of such different varieties. This was taken of a Tiffany lamp at my table at a "tea only" cafe in Co...,Mo.

Have not posted in so long I have a lot of catching up to do. Happy Birthday, Theron! Yes, this was back in May.

Going postal

Well, apparently someone went postal at the Kirkwood Post Office. At first glance, you might think a car ran up on the curb and busted a support column, however, upon further inspection, you will actually see that the damage is right in front of the post office door. It looks like the person or thing that did the damage couldn't wait to get the heck out of there, apparently trying to take a brick support column with them. Interesting.

wisdom teeth hell

Well, I haven't posted in quite awhile...since I had my wisdom teeth yanked from my head. They needed to come out and the older you get, the harder the recovery. Wow, to think that I am too old (or getting there) is crazy. But, as much as I hate to say it, the stats are right. Still recovering as of today, here is run-down of my horrible "shit-magnet-ness."
1. Got teeth out (woke up with my whole mouth swollen and numb). When your mouth is numb (inside and out) it feels like a dead person's skin. Yuck!
2. One day later I apparently got dehydrated and started retching to the point where I could hardly breathe, oh, and you can't blow your nose for a few days, so that was fun.
3. Next day hightail it to the dr.'s office, recevied IV fluids for 2 hours; pepped back up and finally could pee.
4. One day later got dry sockets on both bottom holes; and to think I quit smoking for all of this, and yet dry sockets still came. Had to wait out the weekend, got them packed by the dr. on Monday. As much as i hated the packing (think a mouthful of cloves for about 6 hours after the packing), it helped the pain. At this point, still on pain killers.
5. Got the packing taken out, still dry; got more put back in.
6. Got the packing out, slight infection, put me on antibiotics and more pain pills
7. Infection gone (yay!), dry sockets still there - more packing.
8. Weekend: packing fell out (ouch!), got through the weekend popping a lot of Advil and flushing out the hole even though it brought me to my knees, I almost passed out, and all the orfaces of my face started to "run"
9. Weekend over, go to the dr. "again!" Doc says infection: put me on major antibiotics (most common side effect: DEATH! not kidding, either); have to take 16 pills a day to counter-act the death possibility - I am now on 31 pills a day!! If infection does not get better, must go to hospital. Back on pain meds (good ones too!).
10. Go back to doc b/c the packing fell out. Doc looks and says "for sure" if infection not gone or noticeably better by this Monday, I must go the hospital for 48 hours of IV antibiotics and testing to find out what kind of infection there is. The reason for all this "infection" hype is that the infection went into my jaw bone, and apparently, as is true of all bone infections, they can get in your blood and kill you or re-appear in another bone, which may require amputation.
11. Packing fell out on Thurs. I'm roughing it. Called the doc, finally feel better. Must call back on Monday.

It is is any indication, today went on a short hike nearby (Meramec Highlands). I am feeling much better and getting out of the house after 2 1/2 weeks in bed was sure nice. Blog updates later.

Remember...

"Now, I understand about indecision, but I don't care if I get behind. People living in competition, all I want is to have my peace of mind..." --Boston

Something important (at least for me) to remember. Peace of mind is coming...its called summer. I can't wait until this summer, I have not had one off since I was 15. And now the nerd comment: I can't wait to do a whole bunch of reading this summer!

trunk thought

Saw a bumper sticker on a trunk of a car today: "Birth control and education prevent abortion." Seems like we can all get along now, huh? If abortion is bad, the first two things prevent an abortion, therefore, it seems the problem is solved...
